Meet Sensei Lyle Cheney

Sensei Lyle Cheney has been training in the Martial Arts for the past 49 years. He has studied under some of the World’s most recognized masters and coaches, and holds black belt ranks in Zen Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, and Muay Thai. As a Martial Arts competitor, Mr. Cheney is one of Canada’s elite; winning more than 600 awards in Martial Arts and Kickboxing competitions. In addition to this, Mr. Cheney is a 6-time Western Canadian Karate Champion, as well as the former Western Canadian Kickboxing Champion (1988 – 1993). Mr. Cheney has also won more than 60 Black Belt Grand Champion Awards.

Upon his retirement from Kickboxing in 1994, Sensei Lyle Cheney was ranked as the #8 contender in North America in the Welter Weight division. As an instructor, Mr. Cheney has been teaching for the past 39 years; he has tested over 115 students to the rank of black belt, and during this time has produced multiple North American, Canadian, and Regional champions from his school. Mr. Cheney is a highly regarded official for both Traditional and Full-Contact Martial Arts. Sensei Lyle Cheney is committed to providing top-quality professional instruction, and to help each student reach their full potential as a Martial Artist.

  • International Level “A” Referee for the Canadian Muay Thai Council and the World Kickboxing Association.
  • Certified to Officiate International Professional & Amateur World Title matches as Referee and Judge.
  • Red Deer RCMP Auxiliary Constable – 2001 to 2022.
  • Defensive Tactics instructor for the RCMP Auxiliary Constables – 2010 to 2018.
  • “Referee in Chief”, Ring Sports Officials Association – 2015 to present.
  • World Martial Arts Games, Las Vegas: Double gold medalist (executive division) – 2010
  • Top-ranked competitor for point fighting, forms, weapons, and Kickboxing – 1975 to 2013.
  • Kickboxing Master of the Year, International Martial Arts Hall of Fame – 2013.
  • Black Belt Hall of Fame, Canadian Open Martial Arts Association – 1996, 1997.
  • Coach of the Year, World Kickboxing Association Hall of Fame – 1996.
  • #8 Contender in North America for the Welter Weight Division – 1994.
